The Enduring Legacy of the African American Methodist Church in Chattanooga

A Living History on Lookout Street Walking up the steps of the old brick sanctuary on Lookout Street, you can almost hear the echoes of hymns that have been rising from that spot for more than a century. This is the home of Bethlehem-Wiley United Methodist Church, a congregation whose story is woven into the larger fabric of the African American Methodist church in the South. The building itself, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is more than a landmark.
